If at First You Don't Succeed: Protective Hairstyle Tips

Hello, BeBlended Family!

It certainly has been a while. With the warm weather and the longer days here on the Canadian east coast, you’ve got to plan ahead, whether that be restaurant reservations or hang outs with friends. But have you ever found yourself asking: “What am I going to do with my hair?” You’re not alone sister.

I style my natural hair daily, but every once in a while, I like to try out a protective hairstyle on my own. The learning process can be difficult, but I persevere! Today I can’t say that I have mastered a hairstyle. I am my worst critic, but I can say that my grip is tighter when box braiding my hair and I’ve found a method to crocheting that works for me.

I want to share with you what that journey has been like in bettering my protective hairstyling skills.

I normally start out watching a ton of videos about the different ways to do the desired protective hairstyle.

Then I purchase the hair extensions and any required tools like crocheting hooks.

Doing your own protective hairstyle can definitely result in sore arms, but it’s worth it for the bragging rights you get and a masterpiece you can call your own.

Practice makes progress. When my protective style doesn’t turn out the way I’d like for it to, I try not to get discouraged. Instead, I take mental notes of what I struggled with. Then I search on YouTube or Google to see if any other hair gurus had the same issues and if they have any tips or pointers.

When putting my hair in a protective hairstyle, I have learned that it is best for me to take my time.

Doing your own hair is not for everyone and it takes guts to admit that. It certainly doesn’t hurt to give it a try though.

A lot like in life, the obstacles faced when doing a protective hairstyle are not meant to block you, but to lead you to your goal.

Take care of yourself always.
Hugs,
Joy
